Het AI Dilemma: een zoektocht naar evenwicht tussen technologie en menselijkheid
Artificial intelligence (AI) is hot en doordringt steeds meer ons leven, in de vorm van chatbots tot beeldgeneratie tot personal assistents. Dit roept tal van urgente maatschappelijke vragen op, waarover we ons publiek zouden moeten beraden. De oproep tot bezinning over kansen en bedreigingen van AI wordt echter maar al te vaak overstemd door dramatische voorspellingen over een toekomstige Superintelligentie (the Singularity!), die de mensheid zou kunnen domineren — door sommigen enthousiast omarmd, door anderen dan weer fel gevreesd.
Tijdens de lezing zullen we via een korte historische terugblik en een analyse van de huidige situatie aantonen waarom het vooruitzicht van een alomvattende AI (strong AI) vooralsnog tot het domein van de sciencefiction behoort. Het nastreven van AI om menselijke intelligentie te emuleren is nog steeds een verre droom, ver verwijderd van écht begrip en menselijke leerprocessen. De angst voor ‘te slimme’ machines is ongegrond; in plaats daarvan moeten we waakzaam zijn voor ‘te domme’ machines — machines die niet beschikken over de nuance van menselijk inzicht — waaraan we te gemakkelijk belangrijke beslissingen overlaten.
De lezing zal pleiten voor een vorm van AI die mensgericht is, waarbij mens en machine op een gebalanceerde manier samenwerken.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is hot and increasingly permeates our lives, in the form of chatbots, image generation, to personal assistants. This raises numerous urgent questions that we should think about as a society. The call for reflection on the opportunities and threats of AI is all too often drowned out by dramatic predictions about a future Superintelligence (the Singularity!), which could dominate humanity—embraced enthusiastically by some, and fiercely feared by others.
During the lecture, we will demonstrate through a short historical review and an analysis of the current situation why the prospect of a comprehensive AI (strong AI) still belongs to the realm of science fiction. The pursuit of AI to emulate human intelligence remains a distant dream, far removed from real understanding and human learning processes. The fear of ‘too smart’ machines is unfounded; instead, we should be vigilant of ‘too dumb’ machines — machines that lack the nuance of human insight — to which we too readily entrust important decisions.
The lecture will advocate for a form of AI that is human-centered, where human and machines collaborate in a balanced way.
